@MaureenBond @ShittyChallenge My Instax mini cameras have aperture control for sunny days; at least the recent ones do. My Hello Kitty camera, my wife’s Instax mini 8. Just checked the Polaroid mio and it doesn’t, so maybe the earlier cameras don’t.

@Resgerr @ShittyChallenge I actually just held a filter in front of the lens. That’s part of the difficulty. I have one hand holding the filter and another hand pressing the shutter. I need a third hand to stabilize the camera. The filter has all three colors in it; 1/3 red, 1/3 green, 1/3 blue.

It’s really hard to pull off a tricolor thermal print. There’s no easy way to mount the camera to a tripod. Did my best with gaffers tape, but there are a lot of artifacts in this. @Resgerr @NinianeK @ShittyChallenge As for thermal cameras, I have one, and I enjoy using it. It’s not a million miles away from what I was getting with my toy cameras 15 years ago. But it doesn’t have the associations for me that Polaroid in particular does. It’s a different thing.

@Resgerr @NinianeK @ShittyChallenge I don’t find I get much waste with Instax. This is really the first full failures I’ve seen. I’ve never been happy with what I get on the mini film (until my Hello Kitty shots), but technically, it’s consistent. IP/Polaroid is another story.

@KyleWilesStudio Indeed. That’s kind of what I was getting at. We see that a lot with Polaroids where SX-70 TimeZero is prized for the “fire” that shows up when it ages, or Type 669 when certain dyes fade more quickly than others causing color shifts. Not much of that with Instax.

@ClickErik @imjkunst I’ve disregarded the “5ml per roll” rule with no consequences in the past with no issues. Just saying. But yeah, bromide drag can show up. More of a concern on 35mm than on 120. The sprocket holes seem to make a difference.

@danrubin @Resgerr It works slightly differently than how Polaroid film works. I’m pretty sure it’s descended from the Kodak instant format that Polaroid sued out of existence. It definitely works the same way the Kodak works, where you shoot through the negative instead shooting through the chems.

@danrubin @Resgerr Yes. Expired January, 2004. So I’m not surprised it doesn’t work. I actually find it interesting because there’s been lots of discussion about Impossible and Polaroid films and how they deteriorate (like the fire on old Time/Zero), but none about Instax.

@chadhillphotos The original stuff could get a decent positive at 2 minutes (and I know that’s what you’re using since you said you got it from their Kickstarter), but particularly with their most recent production, I found the positives lacking until I upped the dev time to 3 minutes.

I gather that they had a falling out with one of their suppliers during the campaign and had to halt it because they realized they wouldn’t be able to produce it on an ongoing basis. One Instant color film is basically using the same source.

@Stig_Ofthedump @ILFORDPhoto The other issue I ran into was height. My garage is not tall. Specifically, it is about two inches not tall enough for the pop-up to fit. Pay attention to the specs on the Ilford site and make sure you have the space for it.

@BAnthony_Photo @Stig_Ofthedump @ILFORDPhoto The only issue I had with the pop-up was that my existing safe light setup didn’t work. I had some LEDs on a piece of wood for the grow tent. The pop-up comes to a point with a hook to hang a light, so that didn’t work. But that’s specific to my setup.

@Stig_Ofthedump @ILFORDPhoto Yup. The grow tent felt like a hack. It worked, but I was still figuring stuff out on how to take it in the road (mainly support; what do I put it on that fits in my car). The pop-up solves that for me. Also, I’m more confident that the dark won’t leak out.

@windsorknot @ShittyChallenge No chemical spread near as I can tell. It looks identical when it comes out and several hours later, which indicates to me that there’s no chemical reaction happening, that’s it’s all dried out. That’s the case for the four shots so far, anyway. Hope springs eternal. :-)

@DeanForbesPhoto @ShittyChallenge It’s 20 years old. You have to be really lucky with instant film to get anything out of film that old. That said, it happens. I’ve seen people get results from the old roll film in the original Polaroids. Just not often.

Just developed my second J. Lane dry plate ambrotype, after being kicked to shoot them by seeing some wonderful shots by @toomanycameras. The first one was a disaster. This one seems to have issues, but came out much better. I’ll post it in a few days if it came out.

@crownflintphoto @chadhillphotos Same. I have a Lomo Graflok back for my 4x5 cameras, plus a custom Mercury Camera with a modified Lomo Bel-Air back, both for Instax Wide. I have a Nons SL-42 for Instax Mini, but for some reason, I can never get anything I like to show up on Instax Mini.

@leestevens4 Is there a tripod mount on it? The light seems to be coming through the bottom of the camera. If the tripod mount is covered when it’s in the case but not when it’s out, that could explain it.

Cameradactyl has a print holder via Brooklyn Film Camera that works well: http://www.brooklynfilmcamera.com/accessories/polaroid-scan-adapter-v2 Or you could 3D print something that accomplishes the same thing. I do that for glass plates

@toomanycameras I use a third party Twitter client (Tweetbot, but there’s also Twitteriffic) and never see any of that stuff. I just get a chronological list of stuff posted by people I follow. No recommendations. No ads. Nothing but what I want to see.
